SIP trunking features

8el’s SIP trunking service is provided as two service offerings, allowing organisations to connect either a legacy (TDM) PABX or a SIP enabled, IP PABX back to the 8el voice network.

How it works

SIP trunkingSIP trunking is the mechanism used to interconnect SIP enabled PBXs to 8el’s core network. Utilising the SIP standard protocol for signalling, SIP trunking has emerged as a viable alternative to legacy and fixed-line circuits for the establishment and transmission of voice communications. The network capacity required can also be used to form a Quality of Service (QoS) enabled WAN solution or additional ISP feed for customers.

Calls are switched to the 8el core as VoIP, with call setup and media (VoIP) controlled using SIP. SIP trunking allows companies to rationalise their existing ISDN circuits and channels. Businesses will in turn benefit from 8el’s competitive voice tariffs, therefore further reducing communications expenditure.

Inbound call routing

To allow incoming calls to land within the 8el SIP enabled network, the existing geographic numbers and associated DDI's will need to be ported to 8el. Calls are then mapped to the IP interconnect for onward routing via the SIP trunks.

Rationalisation of existing ISDN30 circuits

Inbound and outbound calls will be switched to VoIP at the 8el centralised PSTN gateway therefore the existing ISDN30 circuits and associated ISDN channels can be rationalised providing an immediate saving on ISDN rentals.

If they are to be retained, once any current BT ISDN30 contract has expired, it is recommended that the ISDN30 circuit is novated to 8el providing the convenience of a single bill and a single point of contact.

Codec support

A range of Codec’s are supported when using the SIP enabled PABX, these include:

  • G726-32/8000
  • GSM/8000
  • G729/8000
  • G723/8000
  • G711 PCMA/8000
  • G726-16/8000
  • G726-24/8000
  • G726-40/8000
  • Plus T38 fax

Outbound call routing

Calls are routed across the customer’s network connection back to the 8el voice network, calls will then be converted to TDM and switched via the PSTN to its destination.

Disaster recovery

Where multiple sites are connected using SIP trunking, policies can be pre configured to route inbound site specific calls to an alternative number or site, ensuring business continuity is maintained in the event of an outage.
