Quality of Service
8el offers Quality of Service (QoS) as standard at no additional charge allowing customers the prioritisation of traffic types (such as VoIP) from the onsite router, through the 8el network and then to the required destination.
8el supports QoS for both LAN Extension Services and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) services by using prioritisation methods, as detailed below:
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)
Quality of Service is inherent to ATM. By configuring an ATM Class of Service (CoS) to a specific traffic type, 8el is able to prioritise based on importance and required bandwidth.
By installing ATM enabled CPE's at customer sites, 8el's ATM core network is extended to the customer, enabling CoS to be configured across the network. In addition, Class-based Weighted Fair Queuing can be used with ATM to prioritise at the application layer.
LAN Extension Services (LES)
To prioritise specific traffic types over a LES service, 8el is able to deploy Ethernet CoS. Ethernet CoS includes Type of Service (ToS) and Differentiated Services (DiffServ). 8el also supports custom queuing techniques such as Class-Based Weighted Fair Queuing.
Voice over IP Support
Voice over IP packets can be prioritised on the 8el CPE. The traffic is then switched across the 8el network to the destination using either an ATM CoS or Ethernet custom queuing.
In this case the 8el core will provide a gateway between ATM and Ethernet, mapping the required CoS and bandwidth across the network.
