VoIP to aid WiMax development

VoIP to aid WiMax developmentExperts are predicting that VoIP (voice over internet protocol) technology could unlock the potential of mobile WiMax around the world.

As many as 2.5 million people could have access to WiMax by the year 2011, according to technology experts in South Korea.

The current figure stands at 250,000; an increase of 150,000 in only a year.

South Korea became the first country to introduce a test WiMax market in 2006 but growth may have been hindered by the relatively slow uptake of VoIP.

ROA Group expert Ku Kang said that VoIP could impact massively on the success of WiMax.

"The availability of VoIP will have a significant influence on subscriber addition," Ku Kang said.

"Voice support is a must if WiBro is to become a 4G mobile technology, and it is a necessary element for competing with HSDPA and its next generation version, LTE, in the 3G/4G mobile market."

VoIP technology could increase WiMax speeds to around 3.6Gbps so the world will watch with interest to see if South Korea can fully integrate the technology.
