VoIP users in Europe "quadruple"

VoIP users in Europe More and more people in Europe are waking up to the benefits of VoIP technology, according to new research.

The amount of people using VoIP in Europe has quadrupled in just two years, says IT analyst Telegeography.

By the end of 2007, there were 25.3 million VoIP lines in Europe, up from 15 million in 2006 and just 6.5 million in 2005.

However, the spread of VoIP users in Europe varies dramatically, with 43 per cent in France and just two per cent in Spain. The UK has a penetration of around 13 per cent.

Paul Brodsky, a Telegeography analyst, said: "A fixed-line revolution is underway in Europe, but it's certainly not happening at a uniform pace."

The report suggests that the growth of VoIP will continue, with European VoIP subscribers projected to reach 37 million by 2008.

Apple recently announced that its new iPod would be VoIP capable, as long as it didn't interfere with their iPhone's services.
