VoIP takes to the skies

VoIP takes to the skiesMiddle Eastern airline Emirates has confirmed that passengers will soon be able to use VoIP during long-haul flights.

The firm has teamed up with Swiss firm OnAir to install Wi-Fi internet access across its 90-strong fleet of double decker Airbus A380 planes.

Customers will be able to use their mobile phone or laptop to access VoIP solutions throughout an intercontinental flight.

Tim Clark, president of Emirates, claimed the firm are always striving to improve its on-board entertainment features.

He said: "Our decision to install a full set of in-flight connectivity services is part of our ongoing effort to provide customers with the real-time access to information that they demand."

Since its formation in 2005, OnAir have operated 120,000 internet-enabled flights to 75 countries across the world.

Emirates will begin installing the new technology at the beginning of next year and expect the scheme to be fully operational in June 2012.
