VoIP subscriptions 'grew by 15% during 2009'
The number of businesses and consumers subscribing to voice over internet protocol (VoIP) services rose by 15 per cent during 2009, according to new research.
Point Topic has revealed that for the first time in the technology's history, more than 100 million worldwide users had adopted the medium.
John Bonsell, senior analyst at the company, said:"This represents steady growth, particularly in the face of the financial turmoil of the recent past."
But he added that the global economic downturn could have in fact been an "uptake driver" for VoIP, as companies and individuals alike should be saving money by adopting the technology.
According to the research, there are now some 950,000 people in the UK using VoIP - however America took the worldwide lead in consumer uptake with 22,704,900 subscribers to the technology.
George Van Horn, senior analyst at market research company IBISWorld, recently advised that VoIP uptake is expected to increase in the future as call quality improves and broadband penetration expands.
