Small businesses fear data loss
Small businesses have signalled their fear of data loss and technology malfunction in a new survey by YouGov.
The study, commissioned by Trend Micro, looked into small business anxieties and discovered that 42 per cent of respondents are worried by the possibility of their technology breaking down.
The same percentage cited difficulties with suppliers and clients as being a major stress factor, while 30 per cent were concerned by heavy workloads.
Other anxiety factors were tight deadlines, long hours and theft.
Even though 17 per cent said they had been victims of electronic crime in the past year, only one in ten businesses said they were worried about losing confidential data.
Small businesses may be more vulnerable to data theft as they feel they don't have the budget to put measures in place to prevent it.
According to SMEweb.com, over 500,000 websites were infected by malicious code in the UK in May 2008, most of which belonged to small businesses.
As businesses become ever more dependent on computers and the internet, small business owners would be advised to take moves to secure their data or risk falling foul of hackers.
Aside from data theft, technology malfunction could be devastating for small businesses that don't have appropriate disaster recovery solutions in place.
The risk of losing business critical data such as customer databases can far outweigh the cost of putting a recovery plan in place and so businesses that rely on their data may seriously consider looking at their options.
