Mobile VoIP users 'will increase'
By 2013 there will be 278 million mobile Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) users, according to research by In-Stat.
VoIPplanet has reported that the mobile VoIP industry is likely to generate $32.2 billion (£20 billion) annually within four years.
Frank Dickson, an analyst with the research firm In-Stat, told the publication that there would be lots of different opportunities for businesses because of VoIP.
Half of all mobile phone calls would be made over IP networks by 2019, VoIPplanet reported.
According to Mr Dickson, Wi-Fi is a driver for mobile VoIP applications, as more people are able to access the internet from their mobiles.
He added that smartphones such as the iPhone and BlackBerry were driving mobile VoIP.
Justin Hamilton-Martin, managing director at 8el commented: "Everyone understands the benefits and stigmas attached to a mobile phone. With VoIP capability being added via WiFi connections, the 'anytime, anywhere' principle continues to flow and the good news for customers is that there are both cost and productivity benefits available.
"By having presence visibility, single number follow me capabilities all via a single device we will at last be able to bridge the gap between the mobile and fixed line networks."
This comes as the use of VoIP applications to make phone calls while on airplanes has been debated.
United Press International has reported that in the US, 40 per cent of flight passengers have no problem with VoIP but 45 per cent a ban of the technology on planes.
Passengers are prevented from using mobile phones on flights as it poses a threat to communications equipment but mobile VoIP - where they can make calls using wireless networks - is currently allowed.
