Mobile VoIP 'increases in popularity'

Mobile VoIP 'increases in popularity'The rise in people using Internet Protocol (IP) telephony on their mobile phones has led to the creation of a number of different Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) solutions.

VoIP is growing in popularity and has led to a number of different handsets and softphones being developed.

According to Computer World, there are five VoIP softphones that telephony users should be aware of.

These are QuteCom, SIP Communicator, SFLphone, Empathhy and Ekiga.

All are being celebrated for their ability to add flexibility to working by offering internet-based phone calls.

They have different functions and QuteCom is known for its ability to integrate voice calls, video calls and instant messaging.

SIP Communicator lets voice communication work via the SIP and through file transfers.

The main feature of SFLphone is the incorporation of call transfer and hold, multi-accounts and it includes support of an unlimited number of calls.

Empathy is multi-protocol and it also supports popular instant messaging services, in addition to voice and video calls.

Another feature is its ability to allow users to share and view location information, get support for collaborative applications and take part in group chat.

Finally, Ekiga had the majority of features available on the other softphones and also offers jitter buffering, wideband codecs and echo cancellation.

Not only can these phones be used on a notebook or PC, but they also offer the flexibility of making a call on the go without the hassle of having to find a dedicated device.

This is good news for companies who want to use VoIP as a business internet solution.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Google was preparing to launch a VoIP-enabled mobile phone.

The Times has claimed that the handset, which is expected to arrive on the US market by next year, could be "one of the most advanced smartphones".

Its launch will place it in direct competition with other smartphones such as Apple's iPhone and the BlackBerry.

Google is expected to integrate VoIP into the phone, which will allow users to make free phone calls by communicating over the internet.

Not only will this make communication easier for business workers, but it could also save companies money as they will not have to pay for overseas phone calls which would otherwise have cost them a fortune.

According to Steven Strauss, author of the Small Business Bible, VoIP telephone systems could help companies stay competitive.

He told CNN Money that IP solutions could save businesses money.

Brian Turner, executive editor of MobileWire.co.uk, commented that people no longer looked to phone solutions, bus wanted VoIP and mobile computing devices that have "multimedia functionality".

Gartner's latest mobile phone market report revealed that the third quarter of 2009 saw a 12.8 per cent increase in the sales of smartphones compared to the same period in 2008.

This is compared to just a 0.1 per cent rise in the sale of ordinary mobile phones.
