Configuration 'key to safe VoIP' deployment
Companies investing in VoIP systems need to pay close attention to security issues, an industry expert has warned.
Such communication systems can be perfectly safe if the correct steps are taken during the installation stage, according to Roy Hills, technical director of security consultancy NTA Monitor.
He explained that businesses that want to take advantage of the cost savings offered by VoIP need to ensure that the technology is configured properly.
"The route to a robust VoIP deployment and the efficiencies that an integrated network can provide is via careful configuration, particularly separation and encryption," Mr Hills continued.
IT and telecoms managers also need to think carefully about the implications of implementing VoIP solutions in order to ensure it is set up in a secure manner, he added.
Meanwhile, San Francisco-based communications firm Global IP Solutions has predicted that the growth in the smartphone market will result in a surge in the number of VoIP applications aimed at mobile users.
