Internet-based communications 'the future'
Businesses of the future will turn to internet-based communications solutions to cut their travel costs, an expert has predicted.
Gill Upton, editor of The Business Travel Magazine, said that firms are set to adopt technologies such as video conferencing and web conferencing, which will enable them to communicate with each other over the internet.
For meetings which are not essential or do not require face-to-face communication between business workers, video conferencing is proving to be increasingly popular among firms, she suggested.
"Video conferencing works really well as technology has improved and it is much cheaper to set up," Ms Upton said.
According to the Business Travel Coalition 2008 report, published this month, the impact of the global economic crisis has already led 25.5 per cent of firms to implement emergency travel cutbacks.
Some 34.4 per cent of firms in the study indicated that that they have initiated travel freezes since the onset of the credit crunch, while the same amount of businesses suggested they now opt for low-cost flights instead of major network airlines.
