Online communications makes firms 'leaner and greener'
Taking advantage of emerging online communications technologies is one of the best ways a business can cut back on its carbon footprint while also saving money, the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) has explained.
New figures compiled by Critical Research show that, among FTSE 350 companies, 62 per cent are actively working to reduce their business travel footprint, with a further 24 per cent planning on looking into this in the next few months.
Such an attitude could significantly reduce the number of air-miles clocked up by UK businesses, the environmental campaigning group's head of transport policy Peter Lockley has stated, citing the fact that corporate travel represents around 22 per cent of all the domestic air trips made in the country each year.
In particular, he pointed to the financial and environmental benefits of online communications technologies such as voice-over IP (VoIP) and video-conferencing systems.
Of the companies questioned by the WWF, he stated, "89 per cent believe that if they used it well video conferencing can actually improve their productivity - because all that time they would otherwise spend getting to the airport and when they are in the air [and] then they are probably jet lagged [plus] all the money they save on airfares hotels and on expenses its making them a leaner as well as greener organisation."
