Phone users 'dropping fixed lines for mobile solutions'
New research from Australia has revealed that a growing number of people are completely doing away with their fixed-line phone connections as mobile devices become the default mode of communication.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, figures from the Australian Communications and Media Authority show that fixed-line subscriptions have been declining by 1.7 per cent per year since 2004.
In addition, a survey by the organisation found that one in five respondents would consider ending their fixed-line subscription in order to save money.
Justin Hamilton-Martin, managing director of 8el commented: "Broadband capabilities are enabling VoIP services to prosper in favour of analogue and ISDN lines in the UK. To support this, the drive towards a single device is becoming a serious, hot topic for many organisations. It will not be long before the standard kit for an office user may just be to provide a WiFi enabled mobile to support mobile and the traditional fixed line traffic. This is an exciting development that 8el will be at the forefront of, as this is a natural add on for its CallPort phone system.
Chris Althaus, chief executive of the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association, said that the use of mobile devices in place of fixed phone lines is becoming an increasingly viable option for businesses.
"There's been more and more case studies published which have shown the extraordinary productivity potential of employees being enabled with mobile devices," he told the newspaper.
In a recent article on mobilenewscwp.co.uk, Symantec's mobile product manager Khoi Nguyen explained how the development of smartphones has created opportunities for mobile VoIP solutions.
He claimed that people searching for a VoIP connection will "soon enough turn to a smartphone device rather than a laptop".
