Next few months are 'crucial' to WiMax technology success
The next generation of wireless communications technology is entering a crucial point, with the coming months likely to indicate which way the sector will grow.
That is the conclusion reached on the back of new research carried out into WiMax technology from the analysts IDC.
According to the firm, worldwide revenue for WiMax semiconductors is likely to grow from £241.2 million this year to around £603 million in 2012 as the technology evolves and growing numbers of corporate users invest in the field.
Flint Pulskamp, program manager for wireless semiconductors at IDC, commented: "The technology has evolved from terrestrial to nomadic to mobile over the last several years and further enhancements to the standard can be expected in the months ahead.
"The next year, however, will tell us a great deal about consumers' interest and acceptance of WiMAX. With competing technologies closing the performance gap, this will be a critical period for WiMAX's future."
The comments come soon after a separate analysis of the sector by ABI Research found that WiMax currently enjoys a significant advantage over its competitors in the rest of the 4G mobile communications market as the service providers of the technology already have good spectrum access, in addition to substantial levels of capital and ready access to sufficient sites for base station coverage.
