Businesses still wary of Web 2.0 technology
A lack of understanding about the business benefits of new online applications is a major factor behind firms failing to invest in Web 2.0 technologies, a new report has concluded.
A poll of senior managers of firms across Europe undertaken by BEA found that many remain unaware or unconvinced of the benefits of interactive user-generated technologies, Computer Weekly has reported.
Of the 320 professionals polled, 23 per cent said that worries over the loss of control involved in opening up a corporate website to users was a major factor in their choosing not to pursue Web 2.0 developments.
However, a substantial number of firms do appreciate the potential benefits of changing the way they run their IT systems.
Nearly a third of those questioned said that Web 2.0 technologies have the potential to boost employee engagement, while 28 per cent saw the possibility of better interaction among partners and between the business and its customers and suppliers.
In addition, the study found that demand for 'mashups' among businesses - where a website or application combines content from more than one source in order to offer improved functionality - is expected to grown significantly in popularity over the next 18 months.
