WAN could be the solution to 'VoIP islands'
Full coverage of voice over IP communications (VoIP) could be set up through wide area networks (WAN) in order to better spread secure internet communications, it has been suggested.
At present, web-based private branch exchanges (IP PBX) are only able to spread voice networks over a limited area, leading many businesses to rely upon several exchanges being established and joined up in order to get wider coverage.
"What we have, by and large, are islands of VoIP", JRB Consulting's Jay Brandstadter told the recent Interop conference on web-based voice technology in Las Vegas.
At the conference it was suggested that WAN could provide the solution to the problem of limited coverage, with businesses able to install the networks in order to spread their IP PBX services.
Not only would this allow the quality of VoIP calls to be significantly improved but it would also boost reliability and allow certain types of traffic to be prioritised.
