VON providers team up to roll out new industry regulations
A number of Europe's leading online communications providers have come together to set out new regulations to cover the burgeoning voice over IP (VoIP) industry.
Central to the work of the newly-established Voice on the Net (VON) Coalition Europe will be dealing with the issue of making emergency calls available through VoIP systems.
While the UK telecommunications watchdog has previously given its support to such proposals and even given its backing for this to be enforced by September 2008, the providers' lobby group are set to work together to attempt to block the European Commission's proposals.
Stephen Collins, director of global governmental and regulatory affairs at Skype, explained: "In order to unleash their vast benefits, policymakers need to embrace forward-thinking policy approaches.
"If we automatically subject this new technology to legacy telephone regulation, consumers and business users could miss out on the new services, increased choices, better prices and improved features that VoIP, for example, can deliver."
The lobby group also includes Google, Intel and Microsoft.
