VoIP island solution put forward
The effective use of WAN optimisation and gateway techniques are the key to overcoming the problem of voice over IP (VoIP) 'islands', it has been claimed.
With such islands costing companies money due to lost connections or delayed calls, experts have pointed to the potential benefits of using WAN and the internet to cut back on the need for PBXs when connecting an organisation's headquarters to other locations.
According to JRB Consulting, the current problem is that VoIP stations are set up in different locations with IP PBXs.
In contrast, gateways offer connectivity from the headquarters to other branches, while WAN optimisation tools such as QoS can also connect VoIP islands and improve long-distance performance levels.
According to the Internet Services Providers' Association (ISPA) new communications technologies are set to boom over the coming years as the broadband market opens up further.
"In the days of dial-up in the UK, we had lots of technologies that were possible, but not over a 56K connection" said a spokesman for the organisation.
"Broadband has made these web technologies [possible] - such as streaming media, like telephone over the internet, [as well as] only downloading movies and music and also consuming movies and music"
