Small businesses being won over by VoIP advantages
Advances in voice over IP (VoIP) technology have allowed small businesses access to a range of evolved communications functions which have previously only been available to or affordable for larger organisations, the Internet Telephony Services Providers' Association (ITSPA) has explained.
According to Colin Duffy, a council member for ITSPA, despite the many benefits of the technology to small enterprises, such as telephone extensions, music on hold and call transfer abilities, a significant number still have only a basic knowledge of VoIP and online communications in general.
Mr Duffy explained: "Although VoIP has been fairly fashionable and written about quite a lot, the vast majority of [SMEs] have no concept of what it is or what it does."
He added, however: "But, as soon as they hear about it, they love it to death. We've seen in our business 12.5 per cent growth per month selling to these small businesses."
The latest yearly Communications Market Report published by Ofcom revealed that 20 per cent of corporate users make telephone calls over the internet, with cost the principal factor behind the growing uptake.
