Mobile WiMax could bring broadband to rural enterprises

Mobile WiMax could bring broadband to rural enterprisesMobile WiMax could become a mainstream technology if it is able to supplement existing mobile networks as an overlay system, a new global market study has predicted.

According to the latest survey undertaken by Forward Concepts, some 200 operators across the world are currently deploying the technology, with operators particularly seeing its potential for providing broadband to both private and corporate users in rural and underdeveloped regions.

According to the group's president, Will Strauss, some of the world's biggest mobile phone operators have put their weight behind WiMax, with more than 30 companies across the globe supplying the necessary infrastructure equipment and 15 offering WiMax radio transceiver chips.

In addition, Carter Horney, principal author of the report, stated: "3G cellular and mobile WiMax are technologies that will serve the majority of the 2012 mobile wireless broadband market, but High Speed OFDM Packet Access (HSOPA), Long Term Evolution (LTE) and/or Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) will also be available by then."
