Mobile communications 'make contingency planning easier'

Mobile communications 'make contingency planning easier'Recent advances in communications technologies have made it easier for businesses of all sizes to prepare for an emergency, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has stated.

The comments come soon after the body launched a new campaign aimed at helping small firms cope in the case of a major emergency, with recent research by Axa showing that seven out of ten would be unable to survive.

Kelly Ostler-Coyle, spokesperson for the ABI, explained: "It is almost easier now to put contingencies in place, especially with things being online.

"Being able to back things up on disc and keep them elsewhere, having laptops for people to work from home, mobile phones, BlackBerrys - it's a lot easier now to communicate with people from outside of the workplace than it has been in the past."

However, she added that the rise in mobile communications tools could also lead to an increased risk of viruses attacking a company's IT operations.

It is currently estimated that last summer's floods resulted in some 165,000 claims being made to insurers, with 27,000 of these coming from the commercial sector.
