"Timing is right" for MID sector growth, experts conclude
Corporate demand for mobile internet devices (MIDs) looks set to soar over the next few years as users attempt to fill the gap between laptop computers and smartphones, industry experts have predicted.
Coming as users continue to look for mobile online communications solutions, research conducted by a panel of analysts at the recent Intel Developer Forum, hosted in Shanghai, shaped the conclusion that the growth of the MID sector will be largely down to the desire to have a range of telecommunications needs bundled together in a single piece of technology.
According to Jim McGregor, research director at analyst In-Stat, MIDs represent the logical next step from Ultra Mobile PCs.
"This is more about timing than technology. The pieces of the puzzle are coming together," he told the technology website vnunet.com.
"The hardware is now powerful enough, the ubiquitous connectivity is there and the demand for full mobile internet access from consumers is there as well."
At the same time, research carried out by Gartner revealed that global enterprise IT budget growth looks set to remain steady at 3.3 per cent in 2008.
