'Huge business potential' for mobile online communications

'Huge business potential' for mobile online communicationsInternet access through mobile phone technology offers a wealth of opportunity for businesses, it has been claimed.

According to Informa Telecoms & Media, the development has proved particularly useful for delivery firms and other organisations with employees on the move.

Dan Winterbottom, principal analyst for the business intelligence provider, explained: "There's a huge amount of potential for businesses to use mobile phones, whether it's just for email access or instant messaging, or some of the more advanced things like external access to intranets or sales force databases that you might have in the office."

He cited the example of delivery firms which have sophisticated ways of tracking parcels using mobile data access held by employees.

"A lot of it's to do with the routing of packages and the routing of delivery drivers," Mr Winterbottom continued.

"If you can cut down on the number of hours people are spending on the road or cut down on the number of miles a package has to move because you've been able to move things around using mobile mapping and navigations software, there are huge savings to be made."

Earlier this year, Ofcom found that one in three UK adults own an internet-enabled mobile phone, with half of revealing they had used it to go online.
