Gartner reveals its IT predictions for 2008

Gartner reveals its IT predictions for 2008More than 50 per cent of the UK workforce will be using mobile devices such as smart-phones and internet-centric palmtops rather than notebooks by 2012 , a new report has predicted.

Among the other top predictions for 2008 published in the new report from research firm Gartner is that 80 per cent of all commercial software will include open-source technology to some extent as this becomes more stable and better supported.

Furthermore, by 2011, businesses which have been early technology adopters will purchase as much as 40 per cent of their IT infrastructure as a service as growing bandwidths make it more feasible and practical to locate their IT operations offsite.

"These areas of focus imply a significant groundswell of change that may in turn change the entire industry," said Daryl Plummer, managing vice president and Gartner Fellow.

"Selected from across our research areas as the most compelling and critical predictions, the trends and topics they address this year indicate a strong focus on individuals, the environment, and alternative ways of buying and selling IT services and technologies."

Though Gartner stated that the impact of these trends will not be felt in 2008, businesses are nevertheless advised to act now so they can exploit the developments for commercial advantage.
