EU next generation network project underway

EU next generation network project underwayWork has started on a new European Union-funded project which is aiming to develop online architecture to support next generation networks.

The project, which is entitled 'Simple Economic Management Approaches Of Overlay Traffic to Heterogeneous Internet Topologies' will run for three years, over which time is expected to study and define the key requirements for a commercial application of Economic Traffic Management (ETM) schemes by internet service providers across the continent.

In order to achieve this, it has been confirmed that the team of researchers will use incentives to control and manage network traffic for overlay online applications.

The initiative comes as demand from both the corporate sector and individuals users for next generation networks is steadily increasing.

According to the EU's own statistics, online traffic in growing by around 100 per cent every 18 months, with demand for online photos, music and films also increasing substantially.

Earlier this month it was reported that BT had shelved its plans to market its dual-mode Wi-Fi handsets to consumers due to a relatively minor amount of interest among non-corporate users.
