100Mbps speeds to be delivered via sewers
Thousands of homes and businesses are set to benefit from super-fast broadband speeds with the introduction of the UK's first 'fibre town', it has been announced.
With government ministers and business leaders recently expressing concern that the UK is lagging behind when it comes to the adoption of next generation networks, plans have been unveiled to provide broadband offering speeds of around 100Mbps via sewerage systems.
The fibre firm H2O, which is behind the initiative, has confirmed that either Bournemouth, Northampton or Dundee will be offered the service first, with local councils and businesses of all sizes to benefit from the increased communications speeds as well as thousands of households.
In addition, as there is no need for any road digging to be carried out, it is also hoped that by using the sewers, ISPs will be able to offer cheaper rates.
Roll out of the new fibres will commence in the chosen location in September, with plans already in place to extend the scheme across a further 14 towns over the next five years.
