British researchers claim broadband breakthrough

British researchers claim broadband breakthroughA device which can improve the speed of broadband internet access by 100 times and at a lower cost has been developed by researchers at a British university, it has been revealed.

The scientists claim that by using existing telecommunications infrastructure more efficiently the machine will enable the downloading of a feature-length film in as little as 15 minutes.

According to Dr Jianming Tang of Bangor University's School of Electronic Engineering, the breakthrough could radically alter the communications industry as well as home and working life for the better.

"The new larger and faster capacity networks would revolutionise home entertainment, delivering high speed HD films and television, high-power computer games and home video-conferencing facilities," Dr Tang said.

"This will make remote working far easier and could have many other applications such as supporting older people in their homes, enabling applications such as tele-medicine to flourish."

The team will now build a prototype device for further testing.

Project efforts were aided by funding of one million euros (£760,000), which had been afforded in order to enable Bangor University to participate in a three-year EU-funded project called Alpha.
