Differing reasons for VoIP uptake

Differing reasons for VoIP uptakeThe recent surge in the uptake of managed Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology is more to do with the replacement of old software than purely for cost reasons, according to a new study.

According to CRN Australia, The World Enterprise Telephony Markets research report from researchers at Frost and Sullivan found that companies tend to be hesitant over switching to VoIP until their current PBX service becomes outdated and outgrown.

Despite this, Gamma Telecom marketing manager Justin Coombes told the website that price can still be a determining factor for some companies and newer businesses are likelier to take on the new technology.

"Cost is a prime driver for SMEs and hosted is a very attractive option for them. Also, many start-up businesses go straight into IP."

The study shows that the uptake of managed VoIP services is set to grow by 6.8 per cent year on year and could reach 62 million units by 2013.
