Virtual office boom down to new technology
According to experts, communications advances in the online sector have led to a boom in 'virtual offices' and flexible working practices in the UK.
Emails, mobile phones and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) telephony seem to be driving the trend, with more and more office workers becoming aware of the ease and benefits of remote working.
A new report, by the Institute of Risk Management (IRM), suggests the availability of the technology has allowed workers to carry out their job almost anywhere meaning that an increasing number of companies and employees can now benefit from remote working.
IRM marketing manager Ian Fraser explained that virtual offices, where employees have the ability to work from anywhere, can also be useful in other instances.
"Virtual offices can limit the impact of a disaster as locations can be spread out, but many types of disaster can affect the parts of a virtual office as well," he said.
Other research has found that many firms cite cutting communication costs as the main reason for the uptake of VoIP, rather than simply to offer employees more flexibility.
