Wide area networks 'keep SMBs competitive'

Wide area networks 'keep SMBs competitive'Smaller firms can boost their competitiveness in the market by narrowing the technological gap to their larger counterparts through the use of wide area networks (Wans), it has been suggested.

Once restricted to larger businesses, wide area networking now allows small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to be more competitive in their networking and therefore pave the way for improved convergence opportunities, according to research by IT services broker OneStopClick.

Multi-protocol label switching has also benefited SMBs as it means private lines are no longer needed and the cost of a corporate network is reduced, the group said.

OneStopClick said its study has shown that SMBs are now more capable of creating networks with modern features that were once out of their reach.

"The most important trend for Wans is the demise of asynchronous transfer mode and frame relay and the rise of MPLS," the firm added.

Meanwhile, some of the latest Wan technologies are to be showcased this week at the Storage Networking World Fall 2008 at the Gaylord Texan in Dallas, Texas.
