Secure business internet solution 'is cloud computing'

Secure business internet solution 'is cloud computing'Cloud computing is a secure business internet solution that provides a safe method of disaster recovery, according to Star.

The on-demand computing and communications service provider's marketing director Martino Corbelli commented that cloud computing gave people better security than they could afford by themselves.

He added that businesses spent a huge percentage of money on technology to support security systems each year but explained that cloud computing was a safer choice.

When remarking on the reliability of cloud computing, for example in the instance of disaster recovery, he remarked: "It's got 24-hour support, it's got more layers of security, everything's backed-up and looked after on a 24/7 basis."

Mr Corbelli said: "How can it not be more secure than a bunch of servers in the basement?"

He stated that the main problem in getting companies to access cloud computing as a business internet solution was the fear that people associated with security.

The definition of cloud computing, according to SearchCloudComputing.com, is something that delivers hosted services over the internet.

Most people, who are holding back from using cloud computing are doing so because they are concerned about whether it is safe to trust a hosted management service with their business infrastructure, research by the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) has said.

Dr Udo Helmbrecht, executive director at ENISA, commented: "The scale and flexibility of cloud computing gives the providers a security edge."

He remarked that providers could call on additional resources for defence such as re-routing and filtering.

In addition, Dr Helmbrecht added that providers could keep more comprehensive evidence for diagnostics while rolling-out new security paths more efficiently.

But despite the many pros of using cloud computing, there is also the negative aspect, as reported by Trend Micro.

The popular take-up of cloud computing by businesses and virtualisation amongst companies has meant that more criminals will be looking for ways to attack the cloud, according to the 2010 Future Threat Report by the organisation.

It alleges that the fact that data is stored in the cloud will be appealing to cyber criminals, who will move outside the traditional perimeter and attempt to break into the cloud.

These attacks are expected from next year as virtualisation and cloud computing becomes more popular.

Cloud computing will be a big trend for 2010, the Sydney Morning Herald has said.

The publication also revealed that virtualisation was likely to become a standard disaster recovery option.

It states that cloud computing would be a central trend becase it "does not eliminate the costs of IT solutions, but does re-arrange some and reduce others".

There will be three types of cloud computing to watch out for - these are those that companies can use for on-demand applications, as a source of computing infrastructure and for organisational purposes.

Next-generation firewalls are likely to take over the functions of other security systems in the new year and there will be a growing emergence of smart grids, the publication noted.
