4m next-generation broadband connections by 2013, says report
A new report has claimed that over four million homes and small businesses in the UK could be using fibre optic broadband connections by 2013.
Research from Point Topic states that there will be approximately 22 million broadband connections in the country by that time, with high-speed fibre optic technology accounting for about 20 per cent of the market.
According to the research company, Virgin Media will continue to enjoy a leading position in the market due to its existing fibre optic network, although other ISPs are expected to challenge the firm's dominance.
"There are a lot of other players coming into the market too. So we estimate there will be over 4.4 million fibre lines by the end of 2013," commented Tim Johnson, chief analyst at Point Topic.
He said that the predictions made in the report were based on "real plans and activity".
Last month, Virgin Media rolled-out its new broadband service offering speeds of 50Mbps, while BT is also launching a £1.5 billion investment to develop its fibre network.
