Irish develop low cost mobile phone software

Irish develop low cost mobile phone softwareA team of researchers at an Irish academic establishment is claiming to have developed the first software in the world to allow users to make low cost mobile phone calls from around the globe.

The team, from the department of computer science at Trinity College Dublin (TCD), are testing the software, codenamed Metakall, this month.

The idea is that users will be able to buy credit in a similar way to pay-as-you-go phones just now, but they would then connect to a local wireless network using Skype, SIP, Fring or any other internet phone system.

Project director Professor Donal O'Mahony is excited by the possibilities and potential of the product.

"The possibilities for this new technology are huge," he said.

"For the first time, users will be able to make low-cost calls from any part of the world using a handset or other mobile device, and will be able to seamlessly roam from one wireless hotspot area to another.2

The team is now looking to form partnerships to help them mass-market the product should the initial tests prove successful.
