Faster broadband 'could mean growth in cloud computing for SMEs'
The adoption of faster broadband services in the UK could mean that an increasing number of small to medium enterprises (SMEs) choose to adopt colocation hosting services such as cloud computing.
Speaking at the Westminster eForum Keynote Seminar on Cloud Computing, Matt Yardley, partner at strategy consulting advice provider Analysys Mason, said that as the UK sees new high-speed internet networks rolled out, a large number of SMEs could be seen to adopt the technology.
But he added that Britain may be a decade away from a full implementation of speedy broadband services so in the meantime, the cloud computing industry will face the challenge of seizing the potential that SMEs have to offer.
According to business internet service provider Easynet Connect, 2010 is set to be the "year of the cloud" for many UK SMEs.
Some 50 per cent of small businesses are using or planning to use the medium over the course of the coming year, with 43 per cent of those questioned saying that it is vital for enabling home working.
