Open-source software is 'attractive business internet solution'
Using open-source software is an attractive business internet solution, according to a risk management expert.
Paul Cronin, the director of Pentura, said it was easy to see from both a business and a cost point of view that open-source was appealing for businesses.
"I use a lot of open-source, so when I get an issue I've got to then rely on the community to help me resolve those issues," he added.
Mr Cronin explained that nine times out of ten the community responses have been better than commercial type software.
His comments come as a report from Which? Computing revealed that by swapping to free security software, businesses could save £1,000.
But Mr Cronin remarked that one of the pitfalls of using open-sourced software was that it left people on their own without the support network that is associated with particular products.
He added that instead of contacting the company that provided the software, people had to speak to communities to get advice and tips.
