Business VoIP users 'need high bandwidth'

Business VoIP users 'need high bandwidth'The commitments to broadband provision outlined in the Digital Britain report do not go far enough for UK businesses, it has been claimed.

According to the report, which was published in its final version on Tuesday (June 16th), every home and business in the country should have access to broadband speeds of at least 2Mbps by 2012.

Writing on freshbusinessthinking.com, Paul Lawton says that this commitment is good news for domestic broadband users but will not benefit businesses that increasingly rely on their internet connection to support flexible working.

He explains that a flexible working strategy typically involves "the use of desktop conferencing, VoIP-based applications and MPLS networking, allowing workers to be connected into the cloud using low-cost broadband links".

However, such technologies require a broadband service that can offer reliable performance and high speeds.

"Digital Britain's focus on downstream speeds of only 2Mbps will limit broadband's wider use, because for businesses it is the upstream which is the limiting factor," Mr Lawton added.

The report states that a range of technologies, including wireless, fibre and satellite, will be used to deliver universal broadband by 2012.
