Midlands hospital benefits from VoIP savings

Midlands hospital benefits from VoIP savingsMore than 200 sites across Birmingham and Solihull are to be connected as a local NHS hospital trust upgrades to voice over IP (VoIP) communications systems over the coming weeks.

Making use of the health service's N3 broadband network, voice calls will be routed around the trust's facilities for no additional cost, though to begin with 200 IP handsets will be used at just three sites as the technology is steadily rolled out.

Commenting on the scheme, Kam Ryatt, the trust's associate director of IT, stated: "By converging our voice and data over the same single network we have delivered a simple, cost-effective and highly efficient way to manage our communications needs."

She went on to add that the cost benefits of VoIP will allow the trust to redirect valuable funds towards helping patients rather than paying phone bills.

The news comes after a recent study carried out by Keynote Systems found that the gap between VoIP and traditional public telephony systems is rapidly closing, with some of the best providers boasting call completion rates of over 99.5 per cent.
