VoIP rescues businesses from bad weather

VoIP rescues businesses from bad weatherThe benefits of online communications systems has again been highlighted with the response of local businesses to the flooding which hit parts of England earlier this summer.

While thousands of households and businesses suffered as a result of flooded roads and broken phone lines, those with internet communications technologies installed were able to carry on as normal.

The Cheltenham-based telecoms company TTL claimed that voice over IP was the "silver lining" in the crisis situation, allowing themselves and their clients to stay afloat throughout the worst of the flooding.

The company's director, Stuart Davis, told Comms Business, about the challenges he faced during the inclement weather.

"Once the mains water ceased, we ran our office on a skeleton staff, with the majority of staff working remotely, via VPN (virtual private network) access and through the use of mobile devices [and] handsets," he revealed.

"This meant that if we did lose power, whilst we would have been unable to use the handsets themselves, the [handset's] software system and failover option meant calls would be diverted to mobiles, ensuring our customers could still reach us and we could remain in touch with them."ADNFCR-1152-ID-18305662-ADNFCR
