Regulators working towards EU-wide VoIP 'harmonisation'

Regulators working towards EU-wide VoIP 'harmonisation'With regulations concerning internet telephony services currently not subject to the usual national boundaries, European Union regulators are calling for the rules covering the sector to be more harmonised.

The chair of the European Regulator's Group, Roberto Viola, has stated that voice over internet protocol (VoIP) systems is a prime area for reform, claiming that improved collaboration between the 27 member states will boost the potential of the technology across the continent and benefit business, Reuters has reported.

"Voice over IP has been identified as a key area for harmonisation," Mr Viola told a recent briefing.

"Pan-European potential (of voice over IP) is prevented by the non-alignment of national regulations."

It has already been agreed that the nomadic use of an IP number should be allowed across the bloc, meaning VoIP customers can be accessed anywhere with the same number, while issues such as ensuring that customers are able to make emergency calls online are also set to be addressed by the body.

Under the current proposals, VoIP providers will be classified as telecoms firms, not as internet services providers as many maintain, and will therefore be subject to the legislation covering this sector. ADNFCR-1152-ID-18330776-ADNFCR
