VoIP and conferencing set to boom in 2008, ISPA reports

VoIP and conferencing set to boom in 2008, ISPA reportsGrowth rates for internet television, voice over IP (VoIP) and online video conferencing services are likely to increase steadily over 2008, a new report has predicted.

According to the Internet Service Providers' Association (ISPA), the household market will be driven by the increased demand from users for high-quality online users, with ISPs set to upgrade their networks to provide faster and more reliable broadband connections.

"Broadband has made possible web technologies such as streaming media, telephone over the internet, and the downloading and consuming of movies and music," said an ISPA spokesperson.

Within the corporate sector, however, the focus is likely to be upon improved communications as growing numbers of businesses take advantage of online telephony technology.

Earlier this week, the University of Cambridge announced that it is to install more than 20,000 VoIP handsets across its faculties and buildings.

"As one of the world's leading universities, Cambridge is keen to attract and retain the very best students and researchers. Part of that involves providing thoroughly modern facilities that reflect our forward-looking relationship with technology" said Ian Lewis, director of university computing services at Cambridge.
