Virtualisation is not total disaster recovery solution, says survey

Virtualisation is not total disaster recovery solution, says surveyNew research has revealed that while many businesses are using virtualisation in their disaster recovery strategies, the majority of firms do not view the technology as a complete solution.

Commissioned by SunGard Availability Services and carried out by Harris Interactive, the survey found that 60 per cent of businesses now have virtualisation in place as part of their continuity plans.

It also discovered that 74 per cent of respondents believe that virtualisation can contribute to disaster recovery planning, but do not view it as a solution on its own.

"The survey reveals companies see virtualisation as part of their disaster recovery strategy, but most recognise they also need more," commented Don Norbeck, technology officer for virtualisation and product strategy at SunGard Availability Services.

He said that the findings demonstrate how co-location data services can play an important role in resilient recovery plans.

"The Achilles heel of many virtualised IT environments is they depend on a single data centre to execute system failover should an outage occur. A recovery strategy with no off-site data centre can result in no recovery," Mr Norbeck added.

A recent survey by Australian telecoms firm Telstra found that 52 per cent of the country's small firms do not have a disaster recovery plan in place.
