Utilities to outsource IT operations in 2008A majority of European utility companies intend to outsource some or all of their IT operations over the next 12 months, new research has revealed.

According to a new study carried out by Energy Insights, a global research analyst for the utilities industry, some 41 per cent of companies in the sector intend to increase their IT spending in 2008, with a further 41 per cent planning to maintain their current budgets.

Significantly, around 65 per cent of those companies polled currently rely on third-party specialists to take care of their IT operations, with outsourcing a particularly popular policy for support services such as project management and IT strategy definition.

Integration was also highlighted as the main area of IT concentartion by the majority of businesses.

Commenting on the figures, Roberta Bigliani, European research director at Energy Insights, said: "In terms of budget allocation, Energy Insights expects cost-cutting initiatives to continue and these increases will mainly be around routine infrastructure."
