Challenger plans UK VoIP entry

Challenger plans UK VoIP entryChallenger Mobile is planning to enter the UK Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) market, it has emerged.

Although the British carrier has not been named, it is thought the deal will see Challenger, a Sweden-based firm, offer free VoIP calls from conventional mobile phones.

The service, due to be launched sometime this month, will be based on session initiation protocol and is designed to operate on 3G, GPRS and Wi-Fi platforms.

"Here at Challenger, we still recommend Wi-Fi over 3G wherever possible since Wi-Fi generally provides higher connection quality and in most cases lower data transfer costs," explained Carl-Johan Grund, co-founder of Challenger.

As well as providing services to individuals, Challenger also offers solutions to small and medium-sized business.
