UK broadband to go super-fast

UK broadband to go super-fastThe UK will be benefiting from super-fast fibre-based broadband by 2012.

BT will roll out the technology, which should see around 10 million homes and businesses achieving speeds of up to 100 Mb.

The potential of the technology could even mean that speeds of more than 1,000 Mb/s are achievable in future.

BT chief executive Ian Livingston said that businesses would benefit from the improved speeds.

"Broadband has boosted the UK economy and is now an essential part of our customers' lives," he said.

"We now want to make a step-change in broadband provision which will offer faster speeds than ever before. This marks the beginning of a new chapter in Britain's broadband story."

The plan would see the UK move back in line with the world's broadband leaders and ensure homes and businesses are not left behind as the internet becomes more content rich.

The £1.5 billion programme is dependent on Ofcom creating a new regulatory framework to ensure that investors are appropriately rewarded for their risk.

BT will also allow its network to be used by all communications providers meaning that the UK maintains its fair wholesale market.
