UK slightly behind EU average in IT outsourcing, study finds

UK behind european average for outsourcingBusinesses in the UK are lagging behind the European average when it comes to outsourcing IT functions, new figures reveal.

According to a recent study carried out by the EU statistics provider Eurostat, 44 per cent of firms within the Euro-zone outsource some aspects of their IT operations to third-party specialists.

In the UK, the rate currently stands at 42 per cent, far above the 20 per cent seen in Hungary though still falling behind Ireland (47 per cent) as well as the Nordic countries of Denmark (76 per cent), Norway (75 per cent) and Finland (70 per cent).

The release of these latest figures comes as outsourcing specialist Duncan Aitchison wrote in Computing Magazine that businesses in Western Europe are likely to use multiple providers of outsourced services rather than just one as the credit crunch takes hold.

Earlier this month the low-cost airline easyJet became the latest business to announce that it is to outsource its IT operations having reached a three-year deal for the running of its 24/7 service desk.
