UK businesses 'yet to embrace fibre broadband'
The British business sector has yet to fully embrace plans for extensive high-speed broadband coverage, an industry expert has claimed.
Chris Marling, editor of the internet service provider website Broadband Genie, said that the private sector has not committed itself to the roll out of super-fast fibre-optic broadband in the UK.
He made the comments in response to a new report from Strategy Analytics, which ranks the UK at number 41 in the world for the development of fibre broadband networks.
"The simple truth is that we don't really have any fibre networks in this country yet, either via BT's infrastructure or cable," Mr Marling explained.
"As has always been the case, when the private sector sees a need for something, it will fall over itself to supply it: that hasn't happened with fibre broadband - yet."
Eight of the top ten nations in Strategy Analytics' table of fibre-enabled countries are located in Asia or eastern Europe, with South Korea taking the top spot as the most well-connected nation.
By the end of 2009, 51 per cent of households in businesses in South Korea will have access to a fibre broadband connection, while Japan is set to achieve 36 per cent penetration and Hong Kong is currently rated at 22 per cent.
