Spam warning for VoIP

Spam warning for VoIPVoice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology could be open to the dangers of spamming, it has been claimed.

IP telephony supplier Telappliant has warned that VoIP could be a target for spammers as it becomes increasingly popular, but the technology exists to tackle the problem.

According to Tan Aksoy, managing director of Telappliant, spam is not a significant issue at present in the VoIP world because take-up remains relatively low.

However, as the technology becomes increasingly popular, it "will probably start seeing an increasing number of spam-types".

IP telephony specialist, 8el acknowledges the dangers but have taken measures to ensure their customer base of VoIP users are unaffected by ‘SPIT’ (Spam over Internet Telephony) attacks.

Technical Director of 8el, Phil O’Keeffe stated “The challenge for IT departments is to allow trusted internal users to communicate with external sources in an IP environment, while preventing unauthorised IP addresses and SPIT from entering the network. 8el utilises Session Border Controllers (SBCs) to ensure only authenticated users can utilise the network to guarantee a secure VoIP service."

8el also plans going forward to allow ENUM (Electronic Phone Numbers) users to enter the network using a spam email style black and white list filtering system to allow legitimate and eliminate unwanted VoIP calls. This service will be launched in line with the deployment of ENUM’s over the coming months.
