SMEs 'missing out on internet benefits'

SMEs 'missing out on internet benefits'A new guide has been produced aimed at getting small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) on board with the concept of internet benefits.

Published by the Institute of Directors (IoD) and broadband provider UK Online, Your Business and the Internet offers a user-friendly introduction to a range of internet-related activities.

These include doing business online, setting up a website and making Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone calls and conferences.

Their research revealed that SMEs are in danger of losing out to their European competitors because they do not harness the opportunities the web offers.

"Being online is fundamental as the internet has placed almost unlimited information and choice in the hands of the consumer," Chris Stening, managing director of UK Online, told vnunet.com.

British Telecom's State of The Small Business Nation report revealed that while SMEs accounting for 10.55 million jobs (47.1 per cent of UK employment) and £967.2 billion (37.2 per cent) of turnover, they are the least understood of the business world.
