Security to be 'major focus' of VoIP industry in 2008

Security to be ‘major focus’ of VoIP industry in 2008On the back of growing concerns among the public and businesses regarding the protection of online data, the implementation of tighter security within the online communications sector is set to be the major development of 2008, experts have suggested.

According to Sal Viveros, a security specialist at McAffee, the introduction of tighter security measures to cover the growing number of calls made using voice over IP (VoIP) technology is set to be the major focus of the industry's development over the coming months.

One major danger to the security remains the lack of knowledge held by companies regarding the potential dangers of using unsecured online communications.

In addition, VoIP providers will have to educate their clients about the threat as many remain unaware.

"Most people aren't aware of the threat and still trust their phones more than they do their computers" Mr Viveros explained.

"[So] the tactic of getting someone to hand over sensitive information to an automated call facility is more likely to catch out people that are not aware of this issue.
