Outsourcing 'to drive European IT market' report states

Outsourcing 'to drive European IT market' report statesThe current slowdown in the global economy is likely to influence growing numbers of businesses to outsource at least some, if not all, of their IT operations over the coming months, a new report has concluded.

According to a new study of the sector and its future potential carried out by the analysts IDC, outsourcing will continue to drive growth in the market for IT services in Western Europe.

In 2007, the market for Western IT services totalled some £97 billion, equivalent to a 6.4 per cent revenue growth in comparison to the previous year.

Furthermore, this is likely to continue into the rest of 2008, with the analysts predicting that the sector will be worth £122 billion by the end of the year.

Commenting on the report's findings, Laura Converso, research manager for European services at IDC, told the website IT Pro: "As the European economy slows down, the outsourcing segment continues to be the growth engine for the IT services market.

"At a worldwide level, IDC estimates that Western Europe will eclipse the US to become the largest geographic market for ... outsourcing by 2009," she added.

The comments come soon after separate research undertaken by the same firm found that two-thirds of medium-sized enterprises are currently investing in IT outsourcing to at least some degree.
